Abstract:
A new
multipurpose diffractometer is being designed in collaboration with
Advanced Design Consulting (ADC) for use in the G2 hutch. A six circle,
kappa style, design was chosen to maximize versatility and eliminate
obstacles, such as an Eulerian cradle, to incident or diffracted x-ray
beams. The design will allow the use of a relatively large sample stage
that weighs 7 kg (15.4 lb). The diffractometer consists of two
independent goniometers, a four-circle kappa goniometer and a two-circle
two-theta goniometer. The kappa goniometer is used to position the
sample in any orientation with respect to the incident beam without
blocking the diffracted beam. The two-theta goniometer consists of two
perpendicular circles that can position a detector at any point on the
Ewald sphere.
