Abstract:
I'll trace the origins and early days of MacCHESS, from the "Caesar's Lamplighters" group led by Boris Batterman and Neil Ashcroft in 1976-77 through the construction of CESR and CHESS, the first experiments at CHESS in what we now call structural biology in 1981, the grant application to NIH that initially funded MacCHESS in 1983, its renewal in 1988, and the first high X-ray energy undulator experiments in 1990. Laue diffraction and time-resolved crystallography formed part of the original "Core R&D"; I'll end with their present state of play.
